Las Delicias

Last night we found ourselves craving Mexican food. We ended up at Las Delicias. We were surprised to find that it was pretty busy for a Wednesday night but luckily found a parking spot right as someone pull out! We went in and sat right down. Our waitress took our drink order and quickly brought us a single glass of water. The three of us were confused. After assuming she'd bring us the other two, we waited a few minutes expecting her return. When she came to take our order we had to point out only one glass was given.

As we waited for our food we joked about how she may bring our food out in phases as well! Once she arrived, it was no longer just a joke.  She brought my husband fajitas without tortillas. She brought me half of my order. She did however, bring our friend his entire meal!

I ordered a beef and bean burrito and a chicken and cheese quesadilla. I was starving and was sure I could eat all that I ordered. My husband ordered steak fajitas and our friend ordered a combo plate.

I'm not one to complain so I'm hesitant to write details about my food. However, this is a restaurant critiquing blog... so I'll proceed. While my quesadilla was tasty, and the chicken was fine, there was hardly any cheese! What's a quesadilla with little to no queso? It wasn't bad tasting though!


My burrito was good! It was honestly quite surprising how much it tasted like one of those frozen burritos. I don't mean that in a bad way, it was good! Just not the texture or quality I expected. The green chili on top was sweet with a hint of spicy with that strong pepper taste. Together all the flavors were quite tasty.


The fajitas were great when it comes to the flavors of the toppings. The meat was flavorless though. The dish was served with lettuce, guacamole, tomatoes, pico de gallo and a side of beans. Overall the food was decent. Really nothing to go out of your way to try. Sadly, the service was probably the worst I've had at any Denver restaurant. I was extremely displeased when the bussers parked the garbage can cart next to my table to scrape dirty dishes from the table across from us. Less than appetizing really.

I don't mean to be rude, this restaurant was just far from impressive in my opinion but I may have hit them on a bad night. The parking lot was packed, which seems to tell me that others must enjoy this place for one reason or another. As for me, I'll stick with a "no thank you" when being asked to return to this "Mexican" restaurant.

Rose Garden

Work was slow, our tummies were growling... Chinese sounded good... so we called in an order from the Rose Garden. I shared a plate with a co-worker to save some money and since I can't eat a whole meal myself. We had a hard time picking which one to order since there were so many options! We finally picked Almond Chicken.

I was highly disappointed with the choice. I don't know if it was the restaurant's food I didn't like or if I just really dislike Almond Chicken but I wont repeat either. The fried rice was even un-tasty. It tasted like old refrigerator and didn't have meat or veggies in it, so basically it was just rice with some soy sauce. I was really looking forward to the "egg roll"! When I saw it I knew right away that it wasn't an egg roll, it was a spring roll... if you'd call it that. It wasn't like any spring roll, egg roll or veggie roll I've ever had. It was not worth eating at all.

I'm sad to report that I highly disliked my Rose Garden experience.

Queen of Sheba Ethiopian

Tonight we planned on going to the Cheesecake Factory but due to weather we had to stay close to home. We drove around the area with our iPhone (using Yelp) and found Queen of Sheba Ethiopian. It's a quiet little hole in the wall off of Colfax in Denver. There is just one lady there who runs the whole place alone!

There was a group of about 10 people who had arrived just before us so we were there for a total of 2 hours from start to finish. I can't complain about that either, knowing that the amazing woman was all alone making dinner for 13 people!

We ordered a combo plate for two and our friend ordered a veggie combo plate for one. I guess the combo plates come with an appetizer. It was a spiced lentil mixture stuffed inside of a fried tortilla type bread. It was really tasty!

Our dinners came after about an hour of waiting. Like I said, we were fine with it since it was just one woman working. Our plate had a few different items and included a bread to eat them with. See, the trick to Ethiopian food is that you can't eat it with utensils, rather you use bread to pinch the food with your fingers.  The veggie plate was similar. It came with a few items and bread to pinch the food with.

At first the food was yummy. The bread seemed decent and the meat items were good too. After a few bites I noticed a bitter or a vinegar like after taste. My husband and I noticed it at about the same time. We decided it was coming from the bread and soon my husband found himself using his fingers to try to finish the meal.

Our guest, who is a vegetarian and ordered the veggie combo, loved his food. He did mention a couple of times that he didn't like the fact that he couldn't tell what he was eating (my husband and I had the same challenge). He did enjoy his food quite a bit and even liked the bread it came with.

None of us could finish our plates, so the portions are large. The plates are on average 8-9 dollars or $15 for a one person combo and $30 for a two person combo. I enjoyed the authentic atmosphere, but like I said, it's a little hole in the wall restaurant.

Overall, we found that we really don't like Ethiopian food. We'll never again eat Ethiopian cuisine. However, the woman was very kind and I'm sure if you like Ethiopian food, you'll find hers to be delish. As for me, it's overpriced and hard on my taste buds.

Charcoalburger (Glenwood Springs)

I forgot to post about this cute little drive-in a few weeks ago. Oops!

We had heard great things about Charcoalburger and since we were passing through Glenwood Springs, we decided to give it a try. There were 5 of us and we all ordered burgers. Some ordered fries and a couple ordered milk shakes!!!

The menu was a little like Smashburger's in that you can pick pre-made burgers or create your own and you choose which size burger you want with each one. What makes this burger joint a little unique is that after picking what size you want, you also have to decide if you want that burger made of buffalo, elk, veggie or beef.

We all ordered the regular beef, sadly. It would have been neat to hear opinions on the other meats but oh well! The burgers were good. They tasted just like a burger you'd make at home actually! I'm pretty sure the fries were just the frozen kind you buy at the store and bake. They were dry and boring.

The milk shakes were pretty delicious! I only tried a chocolate one but the berry one looked pretty amazing!

Pricing was average. It's about $6.00 for a beef burger. Other meat choices are a bit more expensive (which must be why we didn't order any).

All in all, I still like Smashburger the most! This place was good... just not the best burger I've ever had.

Waffle House

I've heard of this place many times and never seen one. Don't worry though, earlier this week I was invited to a birthday bash at a Waffle House! Wahoo! I was pretty excited and expected something just like Denny's or IHOP.
I was surprised to see how small the building was. It's a cute little cafe though! You can see the whole kitchen behind the bar stool style counter. You can also choose to sit at a booth but you must have four or more people since there are only 3 of them.
The menu was very simple. There was less than what I expected but that also meant that the prices were lower too. I ordered something like "the special" or similar in name. It was toast, hash browns (I LOVE hash browns and had to order something with some) sausage, eggs and a waffle! No, I can't eat that much but I wanted a waffle, sausage and hash browns and this whole meal came with that and more and was only $6.99!!! What a deal! Gary ordered off the lunch/dinner menu and picked a Philly style steak sandwich. I was pretty excited to sneak a bite!
First bite... eggs. They were cold. Sadly a bad start to a good looking meal! Next bite... hash browns. While tasty, the texture was much like a potato chip. I think they were burnt. I then moved onto the toast. Simply yummy! Just like toast. The sausage was an average sausage with some spice, nothing spectacular and again, kinda cold. So my plate of food wasn't quite a hit but wasn't too horribly bad either.
I tried Gary's sandwich and was thrilled at the yummy taste of goodness. It was good. Not the best Philly style sandwich I've had but it was better than my food! Finally after we were all done with the food in front of us they brought me my waffle. Gary and I were hoping this would be good since it is the Waffle House. Guess what? It was really good! The butter was all melted and the syrup was warm and tasty. The three amazing flavors all together made the waffle the hit of the night! Gary even said it was one of the best waffles ever!
We decided we wont go back since it wasn't anything special and it is a ways away from our house. If it was across the street I might run over for a waffle now and again but their other food was, like I said, nothing special. The overall cleanliness was less than satisfactory but the service was good. Prices were average at about $5-$8 per plate.

Wahoo's Fish Taco's

The atmosphere was pretty cool! All decked out with snow boarding gear and stickers!

This week we decided to go try Wahoo's Fish Taco's. I'm not sure if this is a chain or what but one of our friends had recommended it. Gary LOVES fish taco's so we were excited!

We ordered a plate of fish tacos, one in each flavor and a plate with a shrimp burrito and a Carne Aasada enchilada. The photos above are the two plates we ordered.

The fish taco's were good. Tasty but only a bite of fish per taco AND! this place didn't have salsa! What taco restaurant doesn't have salsa?!

The shrimp burrito was by far my favorite item! It was amazing!!!!

All together the food was decent. My biggest complaint is that you really don't get what you pay for. It was $16.50 for our two plates and water to drink. I wasn't hungry when we went and I was far from full when we left. Sixteen dollars would be a fair price if we would have been satisfied but more than half the plates were filled with flavorless rice and beans. We love fish tacos but we will not be going back to Wahoo's... ever again.

I'm sorry that our first restaurant review was a negative one. It's actually rare we find a place we're not in love with! I'm sure next week will be a more positive experience!!
